How to install Starcat on a Mac

  1. Get OpenDMG. It is a free app store for open source Mac apps. Download OpenDMG.
  2. Search for Starcat and press Get. OpenDMG downloads version 1.8.0 from starcat-app's own GitHub release.
  3. Open it. The download is checked against its SHA-256 fingerprint and its signature is checked on your Mac before it lands in Applications.

Updates to Starcat show up in OpenDMG and install with one button. No account is needed.

What is new in Starcat 1.8.0

### New

- Repository file download: Browse the file tree from repository details, preview source and images, then download selected files including Git LFS.
- System screensaver: Direct can install the Owner avatar wall as a macOS screensaver, then install, update, or remove it in Settings. Cells show artwork only.
- App Store data import: On first launch, Direct can copy the official App Store library, notes, and caches on this Mac, or skip and start fresh. Apple subscriptions are not copied.
- External Star alerts: While Starcat is active, detects Stars added through GitHub, a browser, or other tools, surfaces them as an avatar alert in All Repositories, and syncs them with one click.
- Labs decision engine: Adds an optional, off-by-default TypeSafe Jev experiment. Manual GitHub Lists grouping and tag generation can reuse existing categories first; when new tags are allowed and needed, the configured LLM fills the gap. Includes separate setup and connection testing.

### Improvements

- GitHub Lists grouping: When OAuth restrictions block remote writes for organization repositories, keeps their grouping locally with a clear status and supports retrying after authorization; batch updates now run concurrently for shorter waits.
