About Spyglass

Real Quick Look previews for Google Workspace files on macOS.

How to install Spyglass on a Mac

  1. Get OpenDMG. It is a free app store for open source Mac apps. Download OpenDMG.
  2. Search for Spyglass and press Get. OpenDMG downloads version 1.0.0 from magicelk235's own GitHub release.
  3. Open it. The download is checked against its SHA-256 fingerprint and its signature is checked on your Mac before it lands in Applications.

Updates to Spyglass show up in OpenDMG and install with one button. No account is needed.

Prefer to do it by hand? The developer's file is on GitHub: Spyglass.dmg (3.2 MB).

What is new in Spyglass 1.0.0

Google Drive syncs your Docs, Sheets, and Slides as stub files that hold a
document ID and nothing else. Press Space on one in Finder and you get raw JSON.
Spyglass shows you the document instead.

Every stub type gets a card: `.gdoc`, `.gsheet`, `.gslides`, `.gdraw`, `.gform`,
and `.gsite`. You see the icon, the title, the owner, and a link that opens the
file on Google. It works with no account and no network.

Sign in with Google once and Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drawings render as the
real document. If you're offline, signed out, or Google refuses to export the
file, you get the card instead. Forms and Sites always show the card, because
Google won't export those at all.

## Install

Download `Spyglass.dmg`, drag Spyglass to Applications, and open it once. It
runs from the menu bar. The app is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by
Apple, so Gatekeeper lets it open normally.

## About sign-in

Spyglass hasn't gone through Google's verification review yet. The consent
screen will warn you that the app is unverified, and sign-in is capped at 100
accounts. Rendered previews are optional, so you can skip all of that and still
get the card.

Requires macOS 14 or later.
