About Loadstone

Native macOS window manager — snap windows to halves, quarters, and thirds

How to install Loadstone on a Mac

  1. Get OpenDMG. It is a free app store for open source Mac apps. Download OpenDMG.
  2. Search for Loadstone and press Get. OpenDMG downloads version 0.3.0 from mortenbrudvik's own GitHub release.
  3. Open it. The download is checked against its SHA-256 fingerprint and its signature is checked on your Mac before it lands in Applications.

Updates to Loadstone show up in OpenDMG and install with one button. No account is needed.

Prefer to do it by hand? The developer's file is on GitHub: Loadstone-0.3.0.zip (1.5 MB).

What is new in Loadstone 0.3.0

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon, macOS 14+.

### Get it
Download the zip, unzip, drag Loadstone.app to Applications, then open it.

Loadstone needs Accessibility to move windows: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility. If Loadstone is already listed from an earlier version the grant carries over; otherwise add `/Applications/Loadstone.app`, turn it on, and relaunch.

### New
- **Walk a window across your screens.** Press Left Half (`⌃⌥←`) again on a window that is already in the left half and it moves on to the right half of the screen to its left, so repeated presses walk it across your screens one half at a time. Right Half (`⌃⌥→`) does the same to the right. It works from the menu and after a drag-snap too. At the outer edge of the desk the window stays where it is, with no beep, and a screen above or below does not count.
- Windows that never fill a half exactly, such as Terminal and iTerm2 (which size in character steps) or apps with a minimum width, carry on too once Loadstone has put them in the half.
- The log says why a press did or did not carry a window on. See Troubleshooting in the README.
